NLPS is committed to providing safe, caring and inclusive school communities. The Policy and accompanying procedures ensure that all members of our district feel valued, honoured, and cared for.

All members of NLPS community have the right to expect that policies, programs and communications are inclusive and respectful; taking into consideration visible and invisible diversities including, but not limited to: race, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, religion, culture, and socio-economic status.

Interventions that encompass the words educative, preventative and restorative can be designed/implemented with individuals or groups. They can be short interactions or a structured process over time, depending on the nature/intensity of an incident. The goal of intervening with these 3 words in mind is to move away from punitive interactions and to create opportunities for new awareness and behaviours, while still sending the message that the person(s) are valued and belong in our school community.

Educative : to give intellectual, moral or social instruction

  • What behaviours /actions/words need to be learned to achieve a positive outcome?
  • What skills are needed to demonstrate the desired outcome?
  • How are the skills going to be taught?
  • Who is going to teach the concept and sub-skills?
  • When? Where? other…..

Preventative: actions designed to keep something undesirable from happening

  • What environmental structures need to be adjusted to meet the expected outcomes
  • How will progress of the learning be monitored?
  • How will progress be acknowledged and positively reinforced?
  • Who will be involved/responsible for assessing progress or what new skills may need to be taught?

Restorative: to repair, rebuild, reinstate, redress

  • How do we create conditions for students to fix mistakes and return strengthened?
  • What needs to be done to address the needs of those persons who have been harmed?
  • What processes are important to have students participate in meaningful discussions or mediation to redress harm?

2.10 Inclusion Policy

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all employees reflect on how their interactions can create a respectful, accepting, safe, and supportive environment for the students and staff of our school communities.
